VISITORS WIN AGAIN; TORONTO TOPS FLORIDA 4-2 IN GAME FIVE TO TAKE 3-2 SERIES LEAD

MIAMI—Jason Schmidt bounced back from a disastrous game one start to pitch eight solid innings, and Troy Glaus had three RBI as Toronto beat Florida 4-2 to take a 3-2 lead in the PSCB World Series. The visiting team has won all five games.

Jason SchmidtSchmidt, shelled for 12 runs on 13 hits and six walks in just four innings in game one, found his control this time and issued no walks in his eight innings of work. He scattered eight hits and fanned six.

Florida took a 1-0 lead against Schmidt in the bottom of the first, scoring on a single by Larry Walker, a double by Manny Ramirez, and a sacrifice fly by Frank Thomas.

Toronto took the lead for good in the second against Sidney Ponson, who won the series opener at Skydome. After getting the first two batters, Ponson gave up a double to Moises Alou, and Glaus followed with a long homer to right, and the Jays were up 2-1.

The Blue Jays added an unearned run in the seventh, and tallied one more in the eighth, but missed a chance to add a lot more. They loaded the bases with no outs against Braden Looper. Glaus then walked to force in a run to make it 4-1. But Edgar Renteria and Andruw Jones both struck out, and Bret Boone grounded to third to end the inning.

Ramirez homered in the eighth to make it 4-2, but Schmidt remained in the game into the ninth. When Jose Guillen grounded a single up the middle to open the ninth, the Jays called on Mariano Rivera. Steve Finley greeted Rivera with a double down the left field line, putting the tying run in scoring position and bringing the winning run to the plate. Rivera, however, got Greg Myers to bounce back to the mound, fanned Denny Hocking, and got Lou Merloni to fly out to left to nail down the save.
