New Managers Sought

NEW MANAGERS SOUGHT
PSCB is always looking for potential managers should openings in our 24-team league arise. Please contact commissioner Ernie Brandt if you're interested in running a ball club.

About PSCB

June 23, 2009

Diamond Mind BaseballThe Puget Sound Computer Baseball league (PSCB) is a Seattle-based face-to-face "fantasy" draft league (see history). The league features a continuing roster base and two drafts (see rules). The league currently uses Diamond Mind Baseball as its game of choice; Diamond Mind is not affiliated with PSCB or this Web site.

The league tries to emulate all aspects of Major League Baseball possible under the fantasy format. The league is currently undergoing a major change in structure to meet the changing environment of technology and personnel.

Playoff Update

June 19, 2009
The Angels and White Sox advanced to the Atlantic LCS.  The Mariners and the Cardinals will meet in the Pacific LCS.

Season Completed, Stats Final

June 8, 2009
Congrats to the division champs, New York Yankees, Anaheim, St. Louis and Seattle, and to the wild cards Florida, the White Sox, the Cubs and Baltimore.  The first week playoff schedule is included in this database.

Before playing the first week series, please confirm your 25 man rosters, and make sure and re-read the playoff eligibility rules on the website.

League Play, Conversion Schedule

January 21, 2009
An updated database has been emailed to all league members.  This includes all trades to date, all zero-ing out of players as required by our league rules, a schedule for the upcoming season, and a few manager profiles for those who have submitted profiles to date.

Our league will begin play this season during the week of February 2nd, with the first results due in on Sunday, February 8th.  I will have a full conversion schedule out tomorrow

Development Squads for the post-draft period have been updated.  Please review and let me know if I missed any additions.

The Conversion Schedule for 2009 has been emailed to all league members. The first database will be distributed on February 2nd, when what is expected to be hotly-contested league play will begin.

Prior to the 2nd, I need manager profiles showing 25 man rosters from each squad.  Remember that you must have a rated backup for each position, and that pitchers with 25 or more starts or 45 or more appearances must be kept active at all times.  Also, players with 502 plate appearances must also remain active.

Winter Draft Results

December 29, 2008

Current status of 2008 PSCB Winter Draft

Thanks to everyone for their patience and cooperation in this year's Winter Draft.  Attached hereto is an updated database.

Next up for league business are a few items.

1)  Please report any trades that can now be completed.
2)  Any player you cut prior to the November freeze list who was not selected in this Winter Draft, may be placed back onto your Development Squad.  Remember the maximum number on the D-Squad is 5.  Please report your intent to reclaim such players by January 10, 2009.

In the meantime, the Commissioner's Office will be zeroing out players with less than 30 at bats against same sided pitchers (per rule), importing an updated schedule for 2009, setting up a schedule conversion for our play, re-checking rosters for eligibility issues, and otherwise preparing the game for league play.

Please take a moment to pay dues for 2009 to Rod McCord of the Phillies (our dutiful treasurer), if you have not already done so.  $15 is the amount due.

League Dues, Winter Draft

December 11, 2008 by Ernie
It is that time of year again......

Some things the league does to maintain this enterprise do cost money.  As such, it is necessary to collect dues sometimes.  This year, $15 is deemed necessary to maintain the website, among other things.

Please take a moment to send $15 to our treasurer, Rod McCord

The first phase of the Winter Draft is now on the horizon.  I have attached (in a league email) free agent lists in HTML format for your convenience.  These lists are how I organize the database for my own draft purposes.  You can also find these lists on the database under custom reports, batting register, and pitching register.

Anyway, the draft will officially commence on December 20, 2008, at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time.  It will be conducted by email.  As usual, however, you can expect the draft to commence almost immediately.  Having an official draft date means that you will not be required to submit a pick until that date.  However, most league members do appreciate moving things along.

Pittsburgh has the first selection, followed by the Mets, Texas and Cincinnati.  You need not wait until your pick to send in a proposed pick when you are ready.

Rule Restatements

November 26, 2008 by Ernie
The Rule Restatements will be incorporated into the written rules as set forth on the website.

No player may be played at a position for which he is not rated, except as set forth in the language contained in this restatement.  This is not a new rule, but simply a more detailed explanation of the balanced roster requirement contained in the original rules.  This has been the practice of the PSCB since my involvement (at least) and has been relied upon by managers throughout the existence of the rule.  Furthermore, all of the responses from those managers who contributed to the discussion acknowledged the existence of the belief that this is the rule as it has been enforced in the past, either explicitly or by implication.

While this language was not explicitly set forth previously, it has been communicated to all owners by explanation of the commissioner, and understood by most owners as a necessary implication of the rules as previously written.  A "balanced roster" would, by definition, be meaningless if the characteristics that constitute "balance" can simply be ingnored at a manager's discretion.  While it is certainly true that major league teams are free to move players from position to position at will, that seems to have little bearing on a simulation league where the results of a player's previous season determine his inviolate profile for purposes of our league.

Any manager may propose a modification of the roster or eligibility rules in accordance with the rules set forth on the website.  The first step in that process is to submit the written text of a proposed new rule prior to our World Series.  It would then be voted upon following the World Series for application in the next season.

These restatements are made to provide clarification for new owners, and prospective new owners, and to answer situations that have arisen in previous seasons.  While I am reluctant to change any language in the rules that have governed this league so effectively for well over a decade (or two), I deem these clarifications necessary to provide an effective basis for enforcement of the balanced roster rule on a go forward basis.

Rule Restatements

  1. Regarding freeze lists.

Previous language: Each franchise will retain all rights to those players on their roster, (38 players maximum after the season has started) until their freeze list is due December 1.

Modified language: Each franchise will retain all rights to those players on their roster, (38 players maximum after the season has started) until their freeze list is due, as set by the Commissioner. The freeze list shall be due no sooner than November 1 and no later than December 1.

  1. Regarding team rosters.

Previous language: Each franchise must keep (on their active roster) at least 9 but no more than 12 pitchers (until the rosters are expanded to 33). In addition, managers must keep a normal allotment of players (backup catcher, infielders). The commissioner will have the power to order changes to a team's roster if this doesn't take place.

Modified language: Each franchise must keep on their active roster at least 9 but no more than 12 pitchers (until rosters are expanded to 33). In addition, managers must keep a normal allotment of players. A normal allotment of players means that managers must have a starter and a backup rated for each defensive position. One player may be considered a backup for multiple defensive positions. The commissioner will have the power to order changes to a team’s roster if this doesn’t take place.

  1. Regarding Regular Season Position Player Eligibility.

Previous language: Players will be eligible to start 100% of as many games as they did in real life, or up to 100% of their plate appearances.

Modified language. Players will be eligible to appear in 100% of as many games as they did in real life, or up to 100% of their plate appearances. Managers are prohibited from starting a player at a position for which they are not rated defensively by Diamond Mind. After a game has begun, a manager may use an unrated player at a defensive position only after all possible alternatives have been exhausted. This requirement, however, shall not be interpreted to require a manager to use a player defensively if that player is already in the game as a designated hitter.
